Search Tips

Multi-field searches are evaluated on an AND basis. Results include only those records which meet all of the criteria you have specified.

Only fields with criteria entered are evaluated during the search.

The "@" symbol may be used for wildcard searches, including used alone to retrieve all records containing anything other than null (no) data.

When searching for records that contain photos, place the wildcard character in the "Photo Credit/Note" field.

Normalization of Data

It is common to see references to PRR steam locomotive classes with or without hyphens ("K-4s" vs. "K4s"). For the sake of ease in searching, this database does NOT use hyphens.

If a locomotive changes road numbers over the course of its life, there will be a record for it under each road number. However, the complete history will be contained within the record of its original road number and class. All subsequent records of the locomotive under other numbers will contain a cross reference to the original record.

If a given locomotive number has its class changed over time, due to modifications, and maintains the same road number, its entire history is contained within the record of its original number and class. So, if loco "x" is originally class "a" and later is modified to class "b", searching for it as class "b" will return no results. We are currently evaluating the best method of handling this common scenario.
