Published PRR Layouts

This page contains a listing of "Pennsy flavored" layouts that have been published over the years...both in magazines and in layout design books.

In the case of layouts presented in design books or for design ideas, critical feedback may be provided. In the case of layouts highlighting the work of a modeler, this will not be the case. Each and every modeler is the "superintendent" of their system and have a right to balance "proto-realism" vs. "modeler's license". To each his own!

Thanks to all who have contributed to this list. New submissions may be directed to j-e-r-r-y@p-e-n-n-s-y-r-r-.c-o-m. Thank you.

Altoona to Pittsburgh over Horse Shoe Curve, by Doug Taylor, published in the May 1998 issue of Model Railroader. HO scale.

Lessons of the South Penn, by Neal Schorr, published in the April 1997 issue of Model Railroader (an earlier article appeared in the May 1990 issue of Model Railroader). Models the never completed South Pennsylvania RR from Conway Yard west of Pittsburgh to Enola Yard near Harrisburg over what is in reality today the Pennsylvania Turnpike. HO scale, 16' by 24', 30" minimum radius curves, number 6 turnouts, 1.8% maximum grade, walk around design. Mid to large size layout.

Pennsylvania Railroad Middle and Pittsburgh Divisions, by John Armstrong, published in Twenty Custom Designed Track Plans, Kalmbach Publishers. Models Harrisburg to Pittsburgh (both represented by loops) over Horseshoe Curve including representation of Altoona. Features Spruce Tunnels, Jacks Narrows along the Juniata River, a steel mill, jumpover track, Rockville Bridge, Cresson, Gallitizin, Allegheny and New Portage Tunnels. S scale, 24' by 32', 48" minimum radius mainline curves, mostly number 6 turnouts, 2.5% maximum grade, walk around design. Large size layout.

Comments available in the "PRR-Talk" Archives indicate that the tunnel area is not realistic per the prototype and that the layout seems designed with the intent of running trains westbound up the grade. For eastbounds, there are some operational problems, particularly for eastbounds wishing to enter the Altoona yard.
