Property Atlas of Delaware County, 1909 - A. H. Mueller
I have been able to acquire seven plates from the 1909 Mueller Property Atlas of Delaware County. I am missing two of the plates, unfortunately one is the plate that contains Newtown Square. Below are excerpts from the plates containing the trackage of the Philadelphia and Delaware County Railroad. These initial images are composites made from images taken with a digital camera. Click on the thumbnail to view a larger version of the image. The plates are double folio in size and are becoming brittle with age. I would like to eventually scan them into a digital format.
Pembroke
The Philadelphia and Delaware County left the main line of the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad just past the Fernwood station. Here it crosses the Baltimore Pike and enters into East Lansdowne. This leads to the Pembroke Yard, at this time only two tracks wide. Soon after leaving the yard, the Cardington Branch splits off to the right while the main trackage turns to the left and Newtown Square.
Brookfield
This plate shows the railroad crossing the property of Edward McGrath, "Brookfield". Traveling through Brookfield the P&DC RR crosses Naylor's run for the first of five times. This property later became the Beverly Hills Golf Course. The grade crossing at Garrett Road is shown as well as the trestle of the Philadelphia and Garrettford Street Railway which goes over both the P&DC RR and Naylor's Run. The second crossing of Naylor's Run is shown just beyond the trestle.
Arlington
This plate shows the railroad crossing Garrett Road and passing under the trestle of the Philadelphia and Garrettford Street Railway. Naylor's Run is crossed four times between Garrett Road and State Road. State Road is then crossed at grade as is Cedar Ave. Included in this plate is Arlington Station.
Llanarch
This plate has considerable overlap with the previous plate as it shows Arlington and Cedar Ave. Shown on this plate is the complex intersection of the West Chester Turnpike and Township Line Road. The plate shows the P&DC RR grade crossing of the two highways. The railroad crosses the Philadelphia and West Chester Railway at this point also. This was the site of the "Frog War" caused by the crossing of the railroad right of way by the traction company. The Llanarch station is just beyond the intersection.
Foxcroft
This plate shows the P&DC RR crossing Darby Creek and includes the Brookthorpe and Foxcroft stations.
Newtown Square
Thanks to the generosity of Chuck Ulmann and Frank Martin I have acquired a scan of Newtown Square from a Mueller Atlas of about 1900. Notice the large amount of trackwork at the end of the line. I guess I will have to redesign Newtown Square on the layout! It definitely shows the turntable and its location in relation to the rest of the yard.
Cardington 1
We have left the main branch of the P&DC RR at Cardington Junction and are heading toward Cardington. We see Marshall Road and the extensive industrial complex of the Wolfenden Mills.
Cardington 2
This last plate shows the Cardington Branch from Marshall Road to the end of the line. It includes Millbourne Lumber, Millbourne Mills, and the connection with the Philadelphia and Western Interurban line.
