"PRR Middle Allegheny Division"
Scale : HO
Layout Dimensions 16'x24'
Layout Hight: 44" (At Alto Yard) to 50" (At Gallitzin)
Layout Style: ContinuousÊRunning (4 Track Main)
Track: Atlas Code 100 w/ #6 switchesÊon the main #4 in yards.
Era: 1950's (steam/diesel transition)
Layout location (Martinsburg, Pa)

We will start our tour off in Altoona Pa. With the amount of space I have here (which is about 2.5'), I had to cut some things out you may have seen in other layouts or photos. A small Freight yard occupies Altoona now, but in the future a diesel/steam facility will be adjacent to the freight yard along with a small passenger yard. There is a return loop just east of the yard which will be filled by the rolling hills of Altoona. Alto Tower will also be present.

In this overview of the Yard and you can see just beyond that the return loop. Again the center of the loop will occupy hills with houses in which railroad workers retire to after a hard days work at the local Altoona shops.

In a close up Class J1 freight headed to Conway Yard passes the Broadway Limited, as we make our ascent up the 2% grade from the yard to Horseshoe Curve.

Here is the freight on its way up the climb to Gallitzin.ÊAlong the way we pass yet another passenger train. An E8 Heading the "Pennsylvanian" is on its way to Lewistown for a crew change.

This shot shows the train meet from a birds eye view.Ê

Here is a better view of the whole curve. The curve itself occupies a 6' x 8' space with a 24" minimum radius.

As we make our way up the grade we pass Kittanning point. In this area in the future the Kittanning point interlocking tower will be constructed here. As we pass here we make our way to Gallitzin which is our terminus. The track loops around Gallitzin and returns to Altoona.

In this layout I had a certain location I wanted to model but with space always being an issue I had to make some sacrifices and major adjustments. The Horseshoe Curve is by far not to scale, but with some scenery added in time I think it will come together well. My rolling stock is also still growing, as well as engines. This layout will be wired to a standard cab control w/ wired block control. I personally feel it gets you more involved with the layout to have to switch power to other trains and throw switches.ÊI'm kind of anÊ"old school" modeler.ÊAll switches in the Altoona yard are manual ground throws.Ê Also in time i would like to continue from Altoona Yard and go east and end my terminus at Lewistown Station; perhaps add the interchange in Mount Union with the EBT RR. Thank you for taking the time to view my "Standard Guage Railroad of The World"!
