About This SiteI think I was too young at the time to appreciate the original press coverage Allen McClelland's V&O received. As a teenager in the 1970's, my first recollection of an "awe inspiring" layout was Bruce Chubb's Sunset Valley as it graced numerous issues of Model Railroader. My hobby then went into boxes, and my subscriptions lapsed, as I went off to college and started my career. I returned to model railroading in the early 1990's and renewed my Model Railroader subscription. The first layout that really got my attention was Tony's Allegheny Midland. I followed it feverishly over the years. Through it, I also became familiar with Allen's V&O. It wasn't the track plan of the AM that got my attention -- though the scenery did -- it was the "beyond the basement" concept. My eyes were suddenly open to the fact that I didn't have to build two huge yards out in the open... that I could just provide "indications" that they were just out of sight. The inspiration I drew from the AM, the V&O, Ken McCorry's PRR, and a few other layouts have certainly shown up as "footprints" in my own PRR design. When the Allegheny Midland was dismantled, I felt a permanent site was needed to maintain that inspiration for others. This site is the result. And I thank Tony for allowing me to provide this site and for the feedback he is providing to others through the Forum. Jerry Britton |
